Businesses folding, leaving California

03/09/2011

“More than one in five (21%) of California small-business owners do not expect to be in business in California in three years, according to a recent survey by Small Business California, an advocacy group in San Francisco.

It’s a number Small Business California President Scott Hague calls “scary.”

Yes, if California lost a fifth of its small businesses it would be scary. About 83% of California’s businesses (78% of Orange County’s) have fewer than 10 employees.”  “Are Calif. businesses closing or leaving?

Quote of the day: Richard Lindzen

11/17/2010

“Perhaps we should stop accepting the term, ‘skeptic.’ Skepticism implies doubts about a plausible proposition. Current global warming alarm hardly represents a plausible proposition. Twenty years of repetition and escalation of claims does not make it more plausible. Quite the contrary, the failure to improve the case over 20 years makes the case even less plausible as does the evidence from climategate and other instances of overt cheating.

In the meantime, while I avoid making forecasts for tenths of a degree change in globally averaged temperature anomaly, I am quite willing to state that unprecedented climate catastrophes are not on the horizon though in several thousand years we may return to an ice age.”  “Global Warming:  How to approach the science

Programming note

I am leaving today for a Grand Canyon river trip and won’t return until the end of next month.  A lot can happen in that time, but I will be incommunicado on the Colorado River and won’t find out about it until I return.  How many more IPCC-gates?  Will Pachy go?  More temperature data “adjusting” revelations?  We shall see.

Deleted again! Restored again!

01/02/2010

This blog was deleted Dec. 30, restored the next day, then deleted again this morning! I have no idea what is going on but if anyone else in the skeptic community is having this problem with blogspot I would like to hear about it. I am informed that this should not happen again to this blog, but I am wary after recent events. Happy New Year all.

Blog restored

01/01/2010

Last night I received an email from Blogspot.com informing me that this blog had been “deleted” because of “spam”. As there is no spam on this blog I was perplexed.

All last night and today this blog was dark. Now, with a little help from my friends, this blog has been restored. I don’t know why this happened. I am not paranoid, but blogspot bloggers, be on notice.

Berkeley: to hell with science

12/30/2009

“Berkeley High School is considering a controversial proposal to eliminate science labs and the five science teachers who teach them to free up more resources to help struggling students.

The proposal to put the science-lab cuts on the table was approved recently by Berkeley High’s School Governance Council, a body of teachers, parents, and students who oversee a plan to change the structure of the high school to address Berkeley’s dismal racial achievement gap, where white students are doing far better than the state average while black and Latino students are doing worse.

Paul Gibson, an alternate parent representative on the School Governance Council, said that information presented at council meetings suggests that the science labs were largely classes for white students. He said the decision to consider cutting the labs in order to redirect resources to underperforming students was virtually unanimous.” “Berkeley High May Cut Out Science Labs” h/t Climategate
